Eating with the Season

Learn to coordinate your eating habits with seasonally available crops to benefit local communities and your health. The variety of produce available in each region of the U.S. changes throughout the seasons.  Take advantage of local farmer's markets and become acquainted with the seasonally accessible fruits, vegetables, berries, and farm products in your area. 

Saving your Wallet and the Environment

Purchasing locally grown products provides direct financial support to local farmers, reduces total food costs, and decreases your foods carbon footprint. When you buy food produced within your region, whether at the market or in your grocery store, it requires fewer total resources to transport from the farm to your table.  The decreased resources translate into lower food prices and the savings is passed on to the consumer. Less transportation resources also means that less fossil fuels are consumed and less greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere. 

The Fruit and Vegetable Gap

The benefits of fruits and vegetables in the diet are well documented, but less than 13% of American adults are eating enough fruit and vegetables.  Studies show that diets high in vegetables and fruits are correlated with reduced rates of high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, and cardiac events. Before your next shopping trip, take the time to search for recipes using the fresh produce available in your area.

Cold Green Gazpacho for a Hot Day

Originating in Andalusia, gazpacho is a refreshing blend of summer vegetables best served cold on a hot summer day. The primary ingredients required for this recipe are almost all locally available in Indiana. Avocadoes are optional. I prefer to use my avocadoes to make guacamole to serve with tortilla chips on the side.
